ROCKVILLE, Md. – Phoebe Brinker and
Gina Kim of the Duke women's golf program advanced to the match play portion at the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, which is being contested at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.
Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del., turned in rounds of 70 and 72 over the 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to place tied for second with a two-under-par, 142. In the first round, Brinker carded three birdies on her way to signing for a two-under, 70. She posted an even-par, 72, in the second round Wednesday as she notched 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey.
Rachel Heck earned medalist honors with a four-under-par, 140.
After turning in a 76 in round one, Kim posted a one-under-par, 71, in the second round on her way to placing tied for 26th with a three-over, 147, which was tied for 26th. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., collected three birdies in the final round.
In match play, Brinker was seeded No. 4 and will face 61st seeded Auston Kim at 11:10 a.m., while 26th seeded Kim will go up against 39th seeded Isabella Fierro at 1:20 p.m.
The Duke duo of
Erica Shepherd and
Megan Furtney missed the cut by only one stroke after finishing at seven-over-par, 151. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., carded rounds of 75 and 76, while closing the day at even par over her final nine holes. A product of St. Charles, Ill., Furtney netted scores of 74 and 77, including 13 pars in the final round.
Incoming freshman
Anne Chen missed the cut with rounds of 75 and 79 for a 10-over-par, 154.
Fans will be able to follow the match play portion live on the Golf Channel from Aug. 6-9. From 4-7 p.m., on Aug. 6 for the round of 64 matches. Air times on Aug. 7 will be 1-4 p.m., followed by 11-2 p.m., on Aug. 8 and 1-4 p.m., on Aug. 9.
Duke has three golfers who have won the U.S. Women's Amateur. Virada Nirapathpongporn won in 2003 at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa., while Amanda Blumenherst won in 2008 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., and
Hannah O'Sullivan won in 2015 at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Ore.
