DURHAM, N.C. – On Monday, Duke long snapper Ben Wyatt was named to the 2020 Patrick Mannelly Award preseason watch list.
The award, named after former NFL long snapper and Duke football alumni Patrick Mannelly, is given to the top senior FBS long snapper. Presented by Bernie's Book Bank, the Mannelly Award is in its second season of existence as Notre Dame's John Shannon took home the inaugural honor.
Wyatt, a native of Davidson, N.C., was named to the initial 20-man list. In 38 career games, he has played 270 snaps. The 6-1, 220-pound redshirt senior has been the primary long snapper for the Blue Devils the last three seasons.
Mannelly, who lettered four years for the Blue Devils from 1993-97, was widely known as being the best long snapper in the modern NFL era. During his time in Durham, Mannelly was a four-year starting long snapper, while also becoming a two-year starter on the offensive line. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft and became their career leader in games played at 245.
Ten semifinalists will be selected on Nov. 16 before three finalists are selected on Nov. 27. The winner is tentatively expected to be announced on Dec. 12.
The ACC recently revealed Duke's opponents for the 2020 campaign. The Blue Devils will host Boston College, Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest while traveling to face Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia. Duke's non-conference game will be determined at a later date.
