DURHAM, N.C. – The preseason grind remains steady for the Duke women's soccer program as the team is in its third week of fall practice.
The Blue Devil coaching staff continues to run the squad through a number of challenging drills, while also implanting several principle plays, both offensively and defensively. Fall classes kicked off Monday, as the team begins to settle into the semester.
"It has been so great getting back to practicing on the field with the team, coaching staff and support staff," said senior defender
Taylor Mitchell. "We have been doing a great job at creating a competitive and safe environment for us to continue to grow as players every day. I think we are all just super grateful to have the opportunity to play again."
"Practice has been really exciting over the last couple weeks," said junior forward
Marykate McGuire. "It's been so awesome to be back on the field playing with everyone, it's the best feeling in the world. It's definitely different being on campus with all the new protocols, but everyone has been great and I am more than happy to do whatever is needed in order to stay safe and remain playing."
The Blue Devils returned to campus on month ago, on July 21, marking the second team of Duke student-athletes to return to Durham. The team went underwent a mandatory quarantine period and acclimation time before going through physical testing prior to beginning of fall practice.
"It's definitely been an adjustment being remote for a majority of my classes," Mitchell added when speaking on the fall academic semester. "I think the university is doing a great job at trying to keep the student body as engaged as possible. I did not imagine my senior year to be this way, but I'm making the most of the situation."
Duke made its 25th postseason appearance in program history in 2019, falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils concluded the season ranked No. 18, marking the ninth time in the past 10 seasons that the program has closed out a season nationally ranked.
Duke returns 10 of its 11 starters from a season ago, including 21 of 25 letterwinners from 2019.
