FRANKFORT, Ill. – Erica Shepherd, a sophomore on the Duke University women's golf team, had her run at the Women's Western Amateur Championship come to an end Friday with a 3&2 loss to Sophie Burks at the Prestwick Country Club in Frankfort, Ill.
Shepherd won the first hole Friday morning, but lost the next two to go down by one. A product of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd parred No. 4 and won the hole to get the match back to all square. After three straight holes that were tied, Shepherd bogeyed holes No. 8 and No. 9 fall behind by two.
A par on No. 10 gave Shepherd the hole and she trailed by one, but a bogey on No. 11 sent the match back to 2-UP in favor of Burks. The duo tied the next four holes and then a bogey by Shepherd closed the match on No. 16.
