FRANKFORT, Ill. – Duke University women's golf sophomore
Erica Shepherd cruised Thursday into the quarterfinal round of match play at the Women's Western Amateur Championship as she knocked off two opponents at the Prestwick Country Club in Frankfort, Ill.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd will next face Sophie Burks Friday in the round of eight. Â
Shepherd was paired against Tristyn Nowlin in the morning Thursday and cruised to a 6&4 victory. After both golfers parred the first hole, Shepherd won the next three straight holes on her way to taking a 3-UP lead. She moved the score to 5-UP through nine and closed the match on hole 14. Â
In the afternoon, Shepherd went up against Alexandra Swayne. Both golfers parred the first hole and then Shepherd grabbed a 1-UP lead with a birdie on No. 2. Shepherd bogeyed the next two holes and fell behind by one, but came back to play the final four holes of the front nine at two-under-par to take a 1-UP lead. Â
With a birdie on No. 10, Shepherd went 2-UP and eventually closed the match with a par on No. 16. Â
