Duke Volleyball wants to take this opportunity to thank
Jacki Silar for her continual leadership over the years.
I arrived at Duke in 1999 and her guidance and mentorship has been huge for our volleyball student-athletes and myself as well. Jacki was a collegiate athlete, coach and most recently an administrator. She has worn many hats. We fortunately have been the recipients of her wealth of experience.
There are many fond memories of my time spent with Jacki, but the 2000 NCAA Tournament was a special one when Duke was back in the tournament since 1994. We also had to bus to Penn State on our trip to the Sweet 16. We had a driver from Alabama heading into the snow of State College, Pa., and long story short, Jacki helped arrange for our regular bus driver to get us to State College. Jacki was the best and tried to not let me worry about all of that and concentrate on our team and the upcoming match. We won the first match, and then had to play Penn State in the regional final at their place to get to the Final Four. We took a set off of them and were the only team to do so in the tournament on their march to a national championship.
We have appreciation, gratefulness, and respect for Jacki and her leadership. Her commitment to Duke and all of us has been remarkable and unwavering. She has been a tireless advocate for coaches, student-athletes and all of Duke Athletics. Her compassion and wisdom has been invaluable. We are grateful for our time with her because all of us have been the beneficiaries of her leadership.
We are excited for Jacki to have some time for herself which is well deserved! We will miss her, her guidance and friendship. She has over and over again been an advocate for our team, guided me and given me strength to do the right thing in challenging situations. What a gem – she will be missed beyond words.
Thank you Jacki for being an advocate for all of us over the years!
