DURHAM, N.C. – The 32
nd season in Duke women's soccer history is officially in the books, as the Blue Devils held its annual banquet to celebrate the 2019 campaign virtually. Under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church, the Blue Devils finished sixth in the ACC and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the 25
th time in program history, making their fifth-straight showing in the Big Dance.
A total of six awards were given out on the evening including Newcomer of the Year, Most Inspirational Player, Coaches Award, Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Most Valuable Player. All awards except for the Coaches Award were voted on by the student-athletes.
Senior co-captain and forward
Ella Stevens walked home with one award, being named the team's Most Valuable Player, while fellow senior and co-captain
Mackenzie Coles received the Coaches Award. The sophomore duo of
Mackenzie Pluck and
Delaney Graham each received one award, as Pluck earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player and Graham was awarded Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Redshirt junior
Mia Gyau was tabbed the team's Most Inspirational Player for the second consecutive season, while freshman
Sophie Jones was tabbed Newcomer of the Year.
Stevens proved to be an offensive catalyst for Duke this season, earning All-Region honors for the third time in her career. The Grayson, Ga., native was also named to the All-ACC Second Team, marking her fourth year receiving conference honors. This past season, she tied for the team lead in points with 22, while tying for second in goals scored with eight. Her 82 career points place her sixth all-time in Duke history, while she ranks amongst the top five in program history in career goals scored and career assists (34).
Pluck led the offensive charge for the Blue Devils this season, as she closed out the campaign leading the team in both points and assists. The North Wales, Pa., native was tabbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Week once, while being named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week on two occasions. Pluck registered eight goals on the campaign, including two multi-goal games, while registering at least three points in five contests.
Graham anchored the defensive line for the Duke helping the team to nine shutouts on the season—including four against top 15 opponents, as she earned All-Region honors for the first time. The Atlanta, Ga., native was also named to the All-ACC Second Team, marking her second consecutive season receiving conference laurels.
Jones put together a fantastic rookie season, culminating in ACC All-Freshman Team honors. The 2019 Gatorade National Player of the Year and 2018 United Soccer Girls National Player of the Year started every contest for the Blue Devils prior to suffering a season-ending injury before the matchup at Virginia Tech. The Menlo Park, Calif., native recorded one assist on the season, which came in the ACC opener with NC State.
Gyau was a versatile force for the Blue Devils this season, splitting time between the attacking front and the backline. The Colesville, Md., native notched one goal on the season, which came as the game-winning score at Wake Forest in the 85
th minute of play. She came in as a reserve in the match at No. 1 Virginia, subbing in at left back to help the Blue Devils shutout the nation's top-ranked offense for the first time in 2019.
Coles, a senior co-captain, has played an important role for the Duke women's soccer program in her time in Durham. The Wexford, Penn., native has evolved into a true leader across her four years. Across her career, she has appeared in three matches, including one start. This season she registered a career-high two saves while facing a career-high tying three shots in the matchup against Syracuse.
