DURHAM, N.C. – Following 14 years as both a student-athlete and coach with the Duke men's tennis program,
Jonathan Stokke will resign from his post as Associate Head Coach at the end of May to pursue other professional interests. The former All-American and two-time All-ACC pick joined the staff in July 2010 and has served as the program's associate head coach since 2016.
"Our program has been fortunate for Jonathan's contributions, especially his analytical approach to coaching, his doubles prowess and commitment to improving the on-court performance of our student-athletes," said head coach
Ramsey Smith. "I look forward to supporting his career and future successes in tennis and thank him for being a strong representative of Duke tennis as both a player and coach and for a decade of working together."
Before the Blue Devils' 2020 campaign ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke held a 13-2 record, tying the best start since 2015, as the team finished at No. 20 in the final Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 Poll. Specializing in doubles action, Stokke's duos dropped the doubles point just once all season. Duke had three doubles pairs in the top-80 of the final ITA doubles rankings, with
Nick Stachowiak and
Sean Sculley ranking highest at No. 8.
"It has been an honor to coach a tremendously talented group of student-athletes over the past 10 years who have, in many cases, become friends I value very much," Stokke said. "It has been an incredible privilege to both play for Coach [Jay] Lapidus and coach alongside Ramsey at a truly great university. I will be a Blue Devil fan for life."
While assisting at Duke over the last decade, Stokke helped the program to a 183-91 mark. During his tenure, he was a part of five seasons with 20 or more wins and seven NCAA Team Championship appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Round of 16 and one NCAA Quarterfinal berth. In just his third season on staff, he became the third assistant coach in program history to be named the ITA Carolina Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to working at Duke, Stokke served as an assistant women's tennis coach at Wake Forest for two years. Before coaching at the collegiate level, he instructed highly-ranked junior players at the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C., with Stan Smith and Billy Stearns.
During his playing years, Stokke helped Duke to two ACC Championship titles (2003, 2006) and was named the ACC Tournament MVP in 2006. He played in four consecutive NCAA Championship tournaments, advancing to the Round of 16 three times. For his career, Stokke posted a 93-59 overall singles record and a 113-47 doubles mark – ranking fifth all-time on Duke's doubles list.
Stokke became the first student-athlete in program history to win the ITA National Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship & Leadership Award in 2006 while also earning the USTA Sportsmanship Award – just the second Blue Devil to earn the honor next to Smith. He was an All-American and a two-time All-ACC selection while being named to the All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll for three years.
