Duke men's basketball play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable hoops moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
"We were all hoping Senior Night in 2018 was going to be a story book celebration of a four-year career for Grayson Allen at Duke. One that began with a national championship in 2015 and appeared poised to end with another deep run in the NCAA Tournament in the weeks ahead. But those dreams quickly devolved into a nightmare in the first half that night at Cameron – despite getting to the free throw line 14 times, the Blue Devils would only make four and things were worse from outside where Duke went 1-of-10. At intermission, Duke trailed UNC by 10, 35-25.
"In the locker room at halftime Coach K opted to skip talks of strategy and plays and opted for a simpler approach – noting that his team seemed to be playing tight and with too much pressure. He simply said "get the damn piano off your back" – still one of my favorite quotes from Coach. As subtle and straightforward as that sentiment was – it worked.
"A 9-0 run midway through the second half capped by a Gary Trent, Jr., three-pointer gave Duke the lead 52-50 -- its first since it was 19-18, and the shots that weren't fall in the first half were finally going in. The Blue Devils went 8-of-15 from three in the second stanza, including 5-of-7 over the final 10 minutes. When the horn sounded, a 10-point halftime deficit was distant memory in a 74-64 win. Allen finished the night with 15 points, while Marvin Bagley III added his 19th double-double. For Allen it punctuated a career that saw him compile a 59-6 record at Cameron Indoor Stadium – capped by a 20-point second-half turnaround that won't soon be forgotten."
