Duke women's basketball play-by-play announcer Chris Edwards is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable basketball moments throughout his four years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Edwards' words.
Following a disappointing end to the 2016-17 season, Duke women's basketball entered the following season with lofty expectations, thanks in large part to the foundation laid by a dynamic group of seniors, Lexie Brown, Rebecca Greenwell (the Splash Sisters), Erin Mathias and Bego Faz Davalos, that paced the Blue Devils for much of the year.
Duke finished the regular season 22-7 and earned an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament and were placed in Athens, Ga., for the first and second rounds of the event.
After dispatching a feisty Belmont squad, 72-58, in the opening round, the Blue Devils turned their sights toward the host Georgia Bulldogs two nights later with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.
The game opened with a sea-saw opening stanza that saw the Blue Devils take a 15-12 lead after one period of play - however, that was a close as the Bulldogs would be all night as Duke outscored Georgia, 20-2, over the second quarter to take a 35-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In that second quarter, the Blue Devils held Georgia to just one made field goal over its 19 attempts to break the game open.
After intermission, it was more of the same for the Blue Devils as they took full control of the contest, racing out to a 53-26 lead after three quarters before closing out the game with a 66-40 victory.
Duke was paced by a quartet of players in double-figures, led
Leaonna Odom who poured in 16 points while Brown and Mathias both contributed 14 and Greenwell chipped in 11 as the Blue Devils advanced to the Sweet-16 for the 17th time in program history.
