DURHAM, N.C. – With campus closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Duke women's soccer team are at their respective homes as the spring semester recently came to a close. Check out to see how the Blue Devil freshmen are doing in this week's DWS check-ins.
Julia Burnell – Fr. Midfielder

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?
"I've been lifting in my basement, I'm lucky enough to have a full gym down there. I've been running sprints in my back yard."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"The adjustment to online classes was pretty easy. I didn't have a lot of work left so I really only had finals."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"Staying connected with my teammates has been pretty easy because we have zoom. We do a team Zoom once a week without the coaches and my class been staying in touch lately."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"The most fun thing I've done during quarantine has probably been painting with my sister. We've been painting funny memes, so that's been fun."
What is one thing you miss about being on campus?
"One thing that I miss about campus has been seeing my friends everyday and having the atmosphere to feel motivated and doing everything to the best of my ability."
Emmy Duerr – Fr. Forward

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?
"We have our packet that was prepared for us by our strength and conditioning coaches, so I've been doing that pretty religiously everyday. I've been trying to search the internet for cool and new bodyweight workouts since I don't have a gym at my house, so I've been getting creative."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"My professors were really great about keeping in touch, being reliable and being avalaible via email. All of my assignments were adjusted so that they were easy for us to complete remotely. I didn't think it was too horrible."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"We have FaceTime and Zoom. We have team Zooms twice a week, so it's great to see everyone including the coaching staff. We've been texting and FaceTiming to keep up with each other."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"I have been cooking a lot. I've been cooking dinner a lot and making fun breakfast every morning."
Julia Hannon – Fr. Forward

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?
"I've been staying as active as possible by going to the field and running, going to the track, getting touches against the wall or even lifting weights at home."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"Overall, the transition to online classes was pretty smooth to me, mainly because I had more time than ever to really focus on my classes."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"Our team has done a really good job of staying connected, whether that be over Zoom. We have at least one team Zoom meeting outside of our coaches' meeting once a week. A bunch of us are staying connected through social media."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"The most fun thing I've done during quarantine is play spike ball with my family. We play almost everyday. It's a great way to spend time together and get our competitive juices flowing."
What is one thing you miss about being on campus?
"The thing that I miss the most is just playing and practicing everyday while seeing my teammates and the staff."
Ruthie Jones – Fr. Goalkeeper

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?
"I get to the local field to train and workout while getting my touches in. Other than that, I've been taking a lot of long walk with my family and friends."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"I think the adjustment to online classes wasn't terrible. I didn't love online classes but I was able to get my work done. I tried to structure my day more than I've ever had to."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"We've been staying together a lot as a team I think just through the Zoom meetings, FaceTime and Snapchat. We've been sharing recipes and books we've been reading, along with TV shows and other stuff."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"I've been able to hang out with my siblings a lot, whether it's playing a lot of ping pong, scrabble or other board games. I'm happy to have them home."
Sophie Jones – Fr. Midfielder

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?
"I'm super lucky that my family has a couple dumbbells that I've been able to use. There's been one field that stayed open, so I've been able to get my touches in and stay active."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"I had awesome teachers who helped make the adjustment relatively smooth. Being on the west coast, I was super thankful that I didn't have to go in during normal class time and wake up at 5:30. All of my teachers were super understanding."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"We've done Zoom, FaceTime, Snapchat, and other things. We've stayed connected. Although it's not optimal, it's awesome to be able to use technology and stay connected as a team."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"The most fun things that I've done during quarantine has been puzzling with my families. It's great to spend time together and work towards a common goal."
Natalie Maurer – Fr. Defender

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?:
"I've been doing a lot of running on my own. I've been taking walks with my family and getting touches on the ball—really just anything I can do to just get out of the house."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"Online classes were definitely a big adjustment, I had never taken online classes before. You really just have to adapt and keep up with your work. In the end, I think it was alright but I definitely miss being on campus."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"We've been doing a lot of Zoom and FaceTime calls, and just texting each other to keep up with what we've been doing. We have ways that we send books or TV shows that we've read or seen just to stay in touch."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"The most fun thing I've done during quarantine is spend time with my family or my dog that I miss when I'm at school."
Sarah Piper – Fr. Midfielder/Defender

What are you doing to stay active during the quarantine?:
"I've been doing our running and our lifts, trying to get bike rides in whenever I can. A lot of wall ball but not a lot of human interaction."
How have you adjusted to online classes?
"Online classes were pretty good. I think everybody ended up doing really well and making the best of it. The hardest part was just finding motivation but that was something we could lean on our teammates for."
How are you staying connected with your teammates?
"We have Zoom meetings with our coaches and our support staff. It's been nice to see everyone. Every once in a while we do team Zooms to see how everybody is doing."
What is most fun thing you've done while quarantining?
"The most fun thing I've done during quarantine is probably cooking with my family. That's been pretty fun and I think I've learned a lot. Getting to share those moments with them."
