The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.

"The ACC/Big Ten Challenge is always a highlight of the non-conference schedule, and this year was no exception. With the challenge entering its third decade, Duke was set to be featured for the 14th time in a ranked-vs-ranked matchup in the event -- by far the most of any team in either league. This year also had significant meaning for returning team captains
Tre Jones,
Javin DeLaurier,
Jack White and
Justin Robinson – as just nine month earlier, they'd seen their NCAA Tournament end with a gutting loss to Michigan State in the Elite Eight. Now a trip to East Lansing served as an opportunity to get some measure of revenge.
"The Blue Devils entered the game knowing they would be without
Cassius Stanley, who'd injured his hamstring just days earlier against Winthrop. It left homestanding Sparty, the preseason No. 1 team in the country, led by senior guard Cassius Winston, a decided favorite according to the experts. MSU legend Draymond Green was on hand to see his jersey retired that night, and the Breslin Center was juiced. Things looked bleak for the Blue Devils... until the opening tip.
"While some memorable moments involve exhilarating finishes, this night was simply about dominance, specifically from
Tre Jones. It can be argued that he took the loss the previous season the hardest, and with his mom Debbie, and brother Tyus in the stands he put on a show. The sophomore piled up 20 points and 12 assists, clearly outshining Winston, who was just 4-for-14 from the field for 12 points as Duke led by as many as 22 and rolled to an 87-75 win that wasn't that close.
Jones was one of five in double figures, including DeLaurier who added 10, while
Jack White pitched in seven points, three steals, and two of Duke's 11 blocks on the night. The win improved the Blue Devils to 19-2 all-time in the Challenge, but the lasting memory will easily be the smile on Jones' face as he dribbled out the final seconds – a stark contrast to the freshman who was inconsolable just nine months earlier."
