DURHAM, N.C. – A number of former Duke women's soccer stars are on the grind in the professional ranks in the National Women's Soccer League.
Morgan Reid is set to begin her third year in the NWSL as a member of the Orlando Pride.
Reid, the 38
th pick in the 2018 National Women's Soccer League College Draft, enters her third season in the NWSL and second with the Pride after being traded from the North Carolina Courage prior to the start of last season. The defender logged 602 minutes of action, while earning seven starts with the Pride in 2019.
Reid played and started in all 26 contests in her senior campaign as the Blue Devils made a run to their fourth NCAA College Cup in school history. She finished second on the 2017 squad with 2,311 minutes played and went the full distance in 21 of the 26 matches. Reid served as a senior leader on a Blue Devil defense that posted a school record 18 shutouts while finishing sixth nationally in goals against average (.379) and seventh in shutout percentage (.692).
Q&A with Reid:
What is your favorite Duke memory?
MR: "When I think about my time at Duke, a couple memories pop up. One being our semifinal game in Cary, N.C., my sophomore year. I'm from Cary and my family still lives there I actually played my state championship game where we played our semifinal, so for me it had an extra sentimental value to it. The moment that sticks out the most to me is with seven or eight seconds left in the game—Toni Payne takes the ball down the field and scores a banger with literally seconds left."
What makes Duke such a special place?
MR: "A really special thing about Duke was that it created an environment for friends to become family. My class still talks on a weekly basis, and I talk to some of the people in my class every day. I think it's really special how Duke created an atmosphere where common goals and hard work was a common denominator. It created bonds that will last forever."
How have you been staying active while quarantining?
MR: "Honestly, we are trying to be outside as much as possible, finding new paths and creeks. I think this has also been a good time to connect with friends and family that you might not have talked to all the time with Zoom, FaceTime and all the technology we have this time."
