DURHAM, N.C. – With the 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team's 2020 season coming to a close due to COVID-19 concerns, GoDuke.com recapped the junior class's success this year.
Kelly Chen,
Ema Lazic and
Hannah Zhao compose DWT's junior class and saw another solid year on the court for the Blue Devils.
Chen was dominant in the 2020 season as she was tabbed the seventh-ranked player in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Cerritos, Calif., native went 7-1 in dual match play in singles action since the start of the spring season in January and played to an undefeated 3-0 record in ACC matches. Spending most of the year on Duke's top court, she went 8-5 against nationally ranked foes and was on a six-match win streak prior to play being canceled.
In doubles, Chen teamed up with rookie
Chloe Beck to form Duke's top doubles team. The duo went 8-4 in dual matches and 3-0 in ACC competition.
Chen's biggest win in 2020 came against 2019 NCAA Singles Tournament runner-up Katarina Jokic of Georgia. Chen previously fell to Jokic in the semifinals of the 2019 singles tournament but defeated her (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) in Duke's quarterfinal win over the third-ranked Bulldogs in February at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
In the fall, Chen advanced to the finals of the 2019 ITA Regional Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA Fall National Championship in Newport Beach, Calif.
Lazic saw action for the Blue Devils in the fall and played to a 3-3 record in singles and went 3-2 in doubles competition.
The London native went undefeated at the Furman Fall Classic in September as she defeated opponents from Michigan State, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Zhao saw action in seven of Duke's spring matches and went 3-2 in singles play and 1-1 in the ACC. In doubles, Zhao was 7-2 in dual matches and 1-1 in conference play.
Prior to play being canceled, Zhao took down William & Mary's Elisa Van Meeteren (6-3, 6-1) in Durham. In fall competition, Zhao played to a 6-4 singles record.
