DURHAM, N.C. – Junior
Kelly Chen earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I All-American honors, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
This year, All-American status was based on the unpublished, double run of ITA singles and doubles rankings. 20 singles players and 10 doubles teams received the accolade.
Chen garners the award for the third straight year as a junior, finishing the year ranked No. 7 in the nation before the remaining season was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
The Cerritos, Calif., native went 7-1 in dual match play in singles action since the start of the spring season in January and played to an undefeated 3-0 record in ACC matches. Spending most of the year on Duke's top court, she went 8-5 against nationally ranked foes and was on a six-match win streak prior to play being canceled.
Chen's biggest win in 2020 came against 2019 NCAA Singles Tournament runner-up Katarina Jokic of Georgia. Chen previously fell to Jokic in the semifinals of the 2019 singles tournament but defeated her (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) in Duke's quarterfinal win over the third-ranked Bulldogs in February at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
In doubles, Chen teamed up with rookie
Chloe Beck to form Duke's top doubles team. The duo went 8-4 in dual matches and 3-0 in ACC competition.
2020 marks the 23rd time in program history Duke has earned at least one All-American nod.
