DURHAM, N.C. – In his first season as a Blue Devil, freshman
Garrett Johns put together an impressive 21-5 singles record on the year while going 12-1 in dual action.
Starting off his career at Duke, Johns posted a 9-4 mark in the fall. He earned his first career dual victory at Hawai'I on Jan. 8 and his lone loss of the spring was a three-set battle against No. 17 Tennessee's Pat Harper on court six. Johns edged No. 14 Wake Forest's Eduardo Nava on court five in a super tiebreaker before winning what would be his last match of the year at North Florida.
In doubles action, Johns went 9-5 and paired up with numerous teammates such as
Omni Kumar,
Spencer Furman,
Samuel Rubell,
Nick Stachowiak,
Michael Heller and
Edu Guell. He didn't lose a match when playing No. 2 doubles (3-0), including a 2-0 stint with Stachowiak.

What was your favorite memory from this season?
"My favorite memory from this season was when we beat Illinois at home. The atmosphere from the crowd and team was awesome."
How was the transition coming to Duke – both academically and athletically?
"The transition coming to Duke was great for me. I came in with four other freshmen and we have become really great friends ever since. I have loved the experience so far!"
Who served as a mentor for you this year? How did they help you?
"
Sean Sculley. He was a junior this past year and helped me out with coming in as a freshman. Sean helped me with everything from academic tips and team culture to also being a great upperclassman."
Who is your favorite all-time tennis player and why?
"Nadal. I love his fighting spirit and the way he plays. I have a somewhat similar game to him and in many ways, try to play like him."
What do you look forward to most next year?
"I look forward to getting back on the court with the team. It is going to be a long time since we have seen each other because of COVID-19. Hopefully we can have a really good season next year."
