Duke men's basketball play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable hoops moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
"In retrospect, it's crazy to think that Duke was an underdog when it took the floor in the 2018-19 season opener against Kentucky. While the Blue Devils had the No. 1 recruiting class entering the season, the consensus nationally seemed to be that the Wildcats had slightly more experience. Over the course of two hours in Indianapolis, it's hard to overstate how foolish Coach K's squad made those predictions look. I still remember what was listed as a neutral site game felt very much like a road game for Duke -- and as we'd learn over the next five months, that's where these guys felt most comfortable.
"Midway through the first half Duke led 34-13, an early barrage of 3's and dunks left Kentucky reeling. The Wildcats would never get closer than 12 the rest of the way. The 118-84 dismantling of the No. 2-ranked team in the country was historic in so many ways.
Zion Williamson finished the night 28 points in 23 minutes, which would have set a new benchmark at Duke for points by a freshman in their debut if not for
RJ Barrett pouring in 33 to go along with 6 assists.
Cam Reddish also had 22 and
Tre Jones added seven assists with no turnovers, the first of seven times he would accomplish that feat – yet another program record.
"The 34-point margin of victory was Duke's largest over a top-5 team, and the 118 points set a Champions Classic record – not a bad way to open the season."
