DURHAM, N.C. – On this day in Duke Athletics history, the second-ranked Duke women's tennis team won its 17th ACC Championship title on April 22, 2012 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The championship marked the eighth under head coach
Jamie Ashworth.
The top-seeded Blue Devils in the tournament took down eighth-ranked North Carolina, 4-2.
Ashworth helped guide the Blue Devils to seven other ACC titles after being named head coach in 1997.
Duke also saw great success in the late '80s and throughout the '90s, winning 14 ACC Championship titles in a row.
With the victory, Duke became the first team in ACC history to garner a perfect 11-0 regular season record and win the ACC Tournament.
The Blue Devil lineup was stacked as each player was ranked in singles, highlighted by freshman Beatrice Capra playing No. 1 singles as the second-ranked player in the country. Duke also featured a young team as six of the eight players were either freshmen or sophomores.
In her first season at Duke, Capra was named the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player, the program's first player to earn the honor since Mallory Cecil as part of the program's 2009 ACC Championship victory.
Capra went on to be named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year and ITA National Rookie of the Year that season.
