DURHAM, N.C. – Four Duke student-athletes and two teams have been chosen to be honored by the ACC with the league's Top Six for Service Award. The accolade is presented annually to six student-athletes from each conference institution who demonstrates outstanding dedication to community service and outreach programs.
Both the Duke men's and women's golf programs along with
Kyra Lambert (women's basketball),
Lindsay Sapienza (women's fencing),
Eoin Gronningsater (men's fencing) and
Grace Garverick (rowing) were honored. Â
Lambert, a product of Cibolo, Texas, made her return to the court in 2019-20, after missing two straight years with knee injuries. The tri-captain averaged 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals, while earning All-ACC Academic Team honors. In the community, Lambert helped organize a free Duke women's basketball for Durham elementary school students, while also spearheading frequent trips to the Durham Ronald McDonald House. Â
Gronningsater and Sapienza spearheaded the launch of the Fence for the Fight campaign in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute in support of the Director of Administration/Recruiting for the fencing team,
Elizabeth Beguinet, in her fight against breast cancer. With 1,215 wins this season in combination with pledging from donors, the Fence for the Fight campaign totaled $30,144.55.
A senior native of Sacramento, Calif., Garverick is an active member of the Duke Athletics Community Service Outreach and has volunteered at multiple Reading with the Blue Devils events during her career. She also serves as a coordinator for Duke's partnership with the Urban Ministries of Durham. Garverick has twice been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
The Duke men's and women's golf programs continued the Birdies for Babies program, which raises money for the Duke Children's Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. In its third year of the program, the Blue Devils have raised $47,302. In the abbreviated 2019-20 campaign, Duke raised $10,479.25 for the children.
