HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In Saturday's second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, junior
Jaravee Boonchant led the way for the Duke women's golf team with a one-under, 70, at the 6,266-yard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Boonchant opened the day with a double-bogey on No. 1, but played her next 17 holes at three-under-par. She collected her first birdie of the day on No. 4 as she drained a 39-foot putt. On the 379-yard, par four 12th, Boonchant hit her approach from 195 yards to 15 feet and sank the birdie and then notched her third birdie of the day on the 140-yard, par three 13th as she drained the nine-foot putt. On the day, Boonchant hit 15 greens, 10 fairways and had 31 putts.
A day after carding an even-par, 71, senior
Ana Belac notched a four-over, 75, as she was two-over-par on both the front and back nines. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, collected a 12-foot birdie on No. 4 and notched a birdie on No. 17 to finish with two birdies on the day. She hit 11 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts in the second round.
Belac (146) will enter the final 18 holes only four strokes off the lead and in a tie for 15th, while Boonchant (147) is tied for 18th and five strokes behind Emilia Migliaccio of Wake Forest (142).
As a team, Duke is in a tie for seventh overall with rounds of 299 and 295 for a 36-hole ledger of 594. Wake Forest continues to lead with a 575, while UCLA (580), Baylor (587), Auburn (592), Texas (593), North Carolina (593), Duke (594), Vanderbilt (594), LSU (597) and Arkansas (601) round out the top 10.
Sophomore
Gina Kim kicked off her day with five straight pars, before rolling in a birdie on the par five sixth hole. A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim closed the front nine with a bogey, par and double-bogey. Kim posted seven pars, one birdie on No. 15 and a bogey to finish the back at even. She finished the day with a two-over, 73 and is tied for 32nd overall. Kim hit 13 greens, nine fairways and rolled 31 putts Saturday.
With a team-best three birdies on the front nine, junior
Miranda Wang made the turn at two-over-par, but closed the day with a four-over-par back nine to finish with a 77. She will enter the final day in a tie for 40th with a 151.
Both freshmen
Megan Furtney (85) and
Erica Shepherd (83) struggled on day two.
Duke will close the tournament beginning at 8 a.m., off hole No. 1 along with Vanderbilt and LSU. Furtney will open at 8:20 a.m., off No. 10.
