Belac Paces Blue Devils in Round One

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Senior Ana Belac of the Duke women's golf team carded an even par round of 71 Friday to pace the Blue Devils in round one of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, which is being played at the 6,266 yard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, turned in 16 pars, one birdie and a three-putt bogey on her way to finishing even for the day and will enter the second round in a tie for third place overall. She opened with eight straight pars, before birding the 375-yard, par four ninth hole. Belac hit her 7-iron from 150 yards to within seven feet and rolled in the putt to move to one-under-par.
She then notched eight consecutive pars, including draining a 15-foot par on No. 17 to register the sand save. Belac closed with a three-putt bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 71. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and rolled 30 putts.
Junior Miranda Wang carded a team-high four birdies on her way to signing for a three-over-par, 75, and is tied for 21st overall. A product of Beijing, China, Wang bogeyed her first hole and then notched three pars. She hit her wedge from 120 yards on No. 5 and sunk a three-foot birdie to get back to even. Wang suffered a triple-bogey on the next hole, but responded with back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to make the turn at one-over, 37.
Wang bogied three straight holes to start the back nine and then closed the final six holes at one-under-par as she hit a wedge on the par five 15th to three feet and drained the birdie. She hit 11 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts on the day.
Seeing her first action of 2020 for the Blue Devils, junior Jaravee Boonchant opened the day with a birdie on the 502-yard, par five third hole and was one-under-par through seven holes. She closed the day at seven-over-par over her final 11 holes to finish with a 77. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, collected one birdie on the day on the third hole.
Sophomore Gina Kim carded a six-over, 77, and is tied for 48th, while freshman Erica Shepherd collected posted an 80. Playing as an individual, Megan Furtney notched two birdies and finished with a 77.
As a team, Duke is tied for seventh overall with a 15-over, 299. Wake Forest (287), UCLA (292), Auburn (294), Texas (294), Baylor (294), North Carolina (296), Duke (299), LSU (299), Arkansas (300) and Vanderbilt (302) round out the top 10. The Blue Devils registered only nine birdies on the day.
Duke will tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m., Saturday in the second round along with LSU and Arkansas.
