DURHAM, N.C. – After an impressive shutout victory over in-state foe Campbell on Wednesday, the 12
th-ranked Duke baseball team looks to carry that momentum into the first weekend of ACC play. The Blue Devils welcome No. 11 Florida State to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this weekend, as the two teams will meet for the 103
rd time in program history in Friday's series opener.
The Blue Devils and Seminoles are set for a 4 p.m. start in Friday's matchup, while the first pitch for Saturday's and Sunday's games are both set for 1 p.m. Fans can catch all three games on ACC Network Extra.
Series History
Duke and Florida State will meet for the 103rd time in program history when the two teams square off in Friday's series opener to begin the 2020 ACC slate. The Seminoles own the series advantage, 79-23, while holding a 25-9 mark across games in Durham. Most recently, the two teams met in the 2018 season, where the Blue Devils came away with the series victory in Tallahassee. Duke claimed the first two games of the weekend, before the series finale was canceled due to inclement weather in the Tallahassee area. The Blue Devils have won five of the last seven matchups with the Seminoles. Head coach
Chris Pollard owns a 5-11 career record against Florida State, including a 5-6 mark during his time at Duke.
Scouting the Seminoles
Florida State enters the weekend with a 9-3 overall record in the first season under new head coach Mike Martin Jr. The Seminoles welcome 18 newcomers to their 2020 roster, including 12 freshman and six collegiate transfers. Florida State returns a wealth of experience, highlighted by 2019 All-American Robby Martin, who led FSU in batting average, doubles and runs batted in a season ago. On the mound, the Seminoles return ace and preseason All-American CJ Van Eyk, who had the most innings pitched, wins and strikeouts for the 2019 Florida State team, a squad that made an appearance in the College World Series. Florida State was picked to finish second in the 2020 ACC Atlantic Division in the preseason poll, only behind projected conference-winner Louisville.

Duke looks to carry its momentum from the nonconference slate into this weekend, as the Blue Devils are set to open their 2020 ACC slate. Duke has won 10 of its last 11 contests since dropping the season-opener to Army, highlighted by a nine-game winning streak to end the month of February. The Blue Devils defeated Purdue in the opening game of the weekend, before claiming an extra-innings win over host-Minnesota on day two and falling to Iowa in the final game of the tournament.
Blue Devils Picked to Finish Fourth in ACC Coastal
Duke was picked to finish fourth in the 2020 ACC Coastal Division in a poll voted on by the conference's 14 head coaches. Twelve coaches picked Miami to win the Coastal Division, while North Carolina and Georgia Tech each received one first-place vote apiece. The Hurricanes tallied 93 points, ahead of both North Carolina and Georgia Tech, who tallied 68 points and 66 points, respectively. Duke placed fourth with 65 points, while Virginia (55), Virginia Tech (27) and Pittsburgh (18) rounded out the teams in the division. On the other side, Louisville was picked to take the ACC Atlantic Division with 13 of the 14 potential first-place votes. The Cardinals were also picked as the conference's overall champion.
Duke Ranked in the Polls
After entering the 2020 campaign as a consensus top-20 team, the Blue Devils have risen up the ranks throughout the first three weeks of play and are currently ranked among all six national polls. Duke jumped to No. 8 in the
Perfect Game Top 25 after entering the season at No. 11 in the preseason poll. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 12 by
D1Baseball, the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the USA Today Coaches Poll, while
Baseball America lists Duke at No. 16 and Collegiate Baseball tabs the Blue Devils at No. 26.
Pitching Staff Success
The Duke pitching staff ranks first in both the nation and the ACC in ERA entering the first weekend of the conference play. The Blue Devils have own an earned run average of 1.42, as the Duke pitchers have only surrendered 17 earned runs across 108.0 innings of work. The Duke starters have been superb across the first 12 games of the campaign, as the starting pitchers have only yielded seven runs across 55.1 innings, marking a 1.14 ERA. Additionally, the Duke bullpen has only surrendered 10 earned runs across 52.1 innings of action to earn a 1.72 ERA.
Shutout Season
Duke has totaled six shutouts throughout its first 12 games of the season, which ranks both first in the nation and the ACC. The Blue Devils registered a span of four straight shutouts earlier in the campaign, which served as the longest streak in program history. The Blue Devils earned a shutout over Army West Point, before holding William & Mary and Cornell scoreless across the next three games to mark the four-game span. Most recently, Duke shutout Campbell, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon to pick up its sixth shutout of the season, which ties for the fourth-most in a single season in program history, and already matches last season's overall total.
