DURHAM, N.C.—The Tewaaraton Foundation announced Wednesday the 2020 trophy will not be awarded, but released its final Watch List of the best men and women's college lacrosse players. Three Blue Devils –
JT Giles-Harris, Nakeie Montgomery and
Dyson Williams – were among the players selected to the final list.
Giles-Harris and Montgomery were among those recognized in the first release of the watch list, while Williams was an addition March 11. Williams is the lone freshman among the 70 players honored, while Giles-Harris is one of eight defensemen listed.
A 2019 First Team All-American close defenseman, Giles-Harris was having a solid senior campaign before it was cut short. The Nyack, N.J., native and team captain served as the leader of a young defensive group in 2020. He ranked second among non-faceoff specialists with 21 ground balls and had a team-best 13 caused turnovers. He ranked second in the ACC in caused turnovers this season and was third on the active players list with 70 for his career.
Giles-Harris garnered the ACC Defensive Player of the Week award after helping Duke go 2-0, including an overtime win over No. 20 Richmond. He collected nine ground balls and five caused turnovers and tallied his first career goal in the two contests. The four-year starter is one of 50 players nationally to record at least four caused turnovers in one game, picking up four against the Spiders.
Montgomery, a 2019 All-America third team choice, was starting to hit his stride when the season came to a halt. The Dallas, Texas native had nine goals and six assists. He got off to a bit of a slow start with just six points (3g, 3a) in the first five games of the season, but developed a rhythm in the final three, scoring six goals and three assists for nine points. He had three tallies and an assist in Duke's victory at Loyola.
A rookie attackman, Williams showed he is going to be a nightmare for opposing defenseman. The Ontario native led all Duke scorers with 30 points (25g, 5a) through eight games and was nearing the necessary pace to pass Justin Guterding as the top freshman scorer in Duke history. Williams, the first Canadian attackman to play at Duke since All-American Zack Greer, had at least one goal in all eight games and registered five hat tricks.
Williams became a household name after throwing in seven goals versus No. 20 Richmond. He added four more two days later against Furman to pick up his first career ACC weekly award. At the conclusion of the abbreviated season, Williams led all freshmen nationally with 3.13 goals per game and was fifth in points per game (3.75).
Duke finished the 2020 campaign with a 6-2 overall record and ranked eighth in the final Inside Lacrosse poll.
