DURHAM, N.C. – Following a 13-2 start to the 2020 campaign, Duke men's tennis closes out the season at No. 20 in the final Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 Poll which was released on March 11. The Blue Devils' spring was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Duke's 20th-ranked finish was the best in program history in the last few years of the poll. The Blue Devils' highest ranking by the organization is No. 19 back in 2018, but Duke checked in at No. 19 for three straight weeks this year (2/19-3/4). Duke was among seven ACC teams recognized in the poll, including Florida State who were receiving votes.
ÂOpening up the dual season with a seven-match win streak, Duke's 13-2 record is the best start since going 13-2 in the spring of 2015. The Blue Devils two losses in 2020 came to No. 17 Tennessee on Feb. 7 and No. 14 Wake Forest on March 4.
In their final match of the season, the Blue Devils blanked North Florida on the road in Jacksonville with a 7-0 victory. No. 79
Spencer Furman and
Luca Keist picked up the first doubles win, 6-2, on court two before freshmen
Garrett Johns and
Michael Heller clinched the doubles point on court three (6-3). The Blue Devils went on to win all singles matches in two sets, including Keist who defeated his opponent in a breaker to walk away with a 7-5, 7-6 (1) victory.
While in Florida, the Blue Devils were set to play two ACC opponents in Florida State on Friday, March 13, and No. 25 Miami on Sunday, March 15. Duke went 1-1 in conference action before the season was canceled.
