CHICAGO – In a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Final Four, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team took down third-ranked Georgia, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 7-1 and 2-1 against nationally ranked foes as the Bulldogs drop to 5-1.
"It was a tough match with a lot of emotion," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "We lost to Georgia in the semis of the NCAA Tournament last year. I thought we did a great job of being extremely focused. We were disciplined in our doubles and didn't stray from what's been working the last couple of days. In singles, we competed our butts off. Georgia is so good in singles. We wanted to build on yesterday and we were able to do that today."
For the sixth time this season and second straight match, the Blue Devils captured the doubles point over the Bulldogs.
Georgia was first off the court at No.1 doubles with a 6-3 win as No. 42 Katarina Jokic and Anna Hertel defeated
Chloe Beck and
Kelly Chen. Duke responded and secured the final two dubs courts as
Margaryta Bilokin and
Meible Chi earned a 6-2 win over Marta Gonzalez and Elena Christofi on court two. The first point of the match came down to court three as
Summer Dvorak and
Yasmine Mansouri collected a 6-3 win over No. 48 Morgan Coppoc and Meg Kowalski.
The Bulldogs countered to start off singles action as No. 18 Lea Ma handed No. 74 Bilokin her first loss of the season. Ma was victorious on court two by a 6-1, 7-5 score.
Rookie Beck continued her strong start to her first season as a Blue Devil with her seventh victory to remain undefeated. Ranked No. 17 in the latest ITA poll, Beck defeated Christofi 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets on court five to give the Blue Devils their second point of the match.
Senior Chi was off the court right behind Beck with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) feat over Hertel on court four. With the win, No. 89 Chi also remained undefeated.
Georgia answered with its second point of the match with a court three win. No. 90 Gonzalez defeated Mansouri by a 7-6 (2), 7-5 score.
With a spot in the semifinal match on the line, Chen clinched the match for the Blue Devils in a big way.
In a rematch of the semifinals of the 2019 NCAA Singles Tournament, No. 10 Chen took down 2019 NCAA runner-up Jokic who she lost to in May. Tabbed No. 41 by the ITA, Jokic was unable to hold off Chen in a three-set thriller today. Despite falling 5-7 in the first set, the Cerritos, Calif., native battled back to clinch the match for Duke (5-7, 6-4, 6-2).
"Kelly has been battling," Ashworth said. "She had to battle yesterday. She got beat by Katarina in the semis last year and she really focused today and did a great job."
Duke will challenge ACC rival No. 2 North Carolina Sunday in the semifinals in another rematch. The Blue Devils fell to the Tar Heels in the semifinals of ITA Indoors last February.
"One of the things I told the girls today was you have to play the ball and not the person across the net," Ashworth said. "We have to have that mindset tomorrow. North Carolina is a great team but we have rebounded here and have shown we can be a great team, too. We have to go out and play and keep getting better."
