PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Monday was moving day for the Duke women's golf team at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge as the Blue Devils carded an 11-under-par, 273, on its way to moving into sole possession of first place against a stellar field at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
The Blue Devils carded 19 birdies and one eagle on its way to shooting a team-best 11-under-par, 273, which was tied for the third lowest 18-hole score in Duke history on a par 71 course. Duke went from fourth after round one finished Monday morning to leading by eight strokes.
With a four-under-par, 564, after rounds of 291 and 273, Duke leads UCLA (572), Texas (574), Southern California (576), Wake Forest (576), Arizona State (577), Auburn (581), Kent State (583) and Oregon (587). The field includes nine top 10 teams.
"Today was a lot of fun," commented Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "The weather was great, probably the calmest I've ever seen it here. Ana (Belac) has been a bit sick but right before today's round she said she felt better. Her score seems to reflect that. She and Miranda played real solid golf — five birdies each, no bogies for Miranda and an eagle for Ana."
Four different Blue Devils sit in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard led by senior
Ana Belac and junior
Miranda Wang at tied for fifth with a two-under-par 140. Freshman
Megan Furtney and sophomore
Gina Kim are tied for ninth at even par.
Featuring Duke's best start to the day, Belac opened with a seven-foot birdie putt on No. 10 and a four-foot birdie on No. 11 to move to two-under-par early. She sandwiched birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 with a bogey on the 15th on her way to making the turn at three-under, 33. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, had another bogey on No. 3, but closed in impressive fashion as she hit her approach on the par five fifth to five feet and sank the birdie. She then holed out from 45 yards for eagle on the 505-yard-par five seventh. Belac signed for a season-best five-under-par, 66.
The eagle for Belac marked the eighth of her career, which is one shy of matching Lindy Duncan's school-record of nine. Belac hit 13 greens, all 14 fairways and had 27 putts on the day.
Wang, a product of Beijing, China, signed for a career-best, five-under-par, 66, as she posted a bogey free ledger with five birdies. After opening her second round on hole No 10, Wang rolled in her first birdie from six feet on the 404-yard, par four 13th. She then hit her 9-iron to four feet on the 15th and drained the putt to move to two-under. Wang got up-and-down for birdie on the par five fifth to get to three-under.
For the second straight day, Wang birdied the par three eighth hole as she hit her 7-iron from 153 yards to 10 feet and drained the left-to-right breaking putt. She added her fifth birdie on the 350-yard, par four ninth as she hit her 7-iron from 148 yards to 10 feet and sank the putt. Wang hit 11 fairways, 15 greens and rolled 28 putts. She was 3-of-3 on sand saves on the day.
Furtney collected her second straight round of even-par, 71, and currently sits tied for ninth overall. After making par on her first two holes, Furtney suffered a double-bogey and bogey to fall to three-over-par. She rebounded with back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 for the second straight day. Furtney, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., rolled in a six-footer for birdie on the 15th and then went for the par five 16th in two and then hit her chip shot to two feet and connected on the birdie putt. On the back nine, she collected one birdie on No. 5, two bogeys and six pars on her way to shooting even. She hit 11 greens, 10 fairways and had 28 putts.
A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim opened her day with a bogey on No. 10, but went on to hit her sand wedge from 97 yards to 15 feet and sank the birdie to get back to even. She added another birdie on the par three 15th as she hit her 9-iron from 137 yards onto the back fringe of the green, before holing out. Kim suffered another bogey on No. 1, but played the final eight holes at one-under-par as she added a birdie on No. 7. She notched her seventh even or under par round of the season with a one-under, 71. Kim hit nine fairways, 12 greens and 29 putts.
