BLOOMINGTON, Ill.— Duke University sophomore
Erica Shepherd traveled to her home state of Indiana this week and once again hoisted a trophy as the Blue Devil sophomore claimed the Golfweek Hoosier Amateur by seven strokes at The Pfau Course at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Â
Shepherd is from Greenwood, Ind., which is located only 45 minutes from Bloomington, and collected her second tournament title in her home state since June as she also won the Indiana Women's State Amateur Championship in Indianapolis, Ind., on June 12. Â
"This course really tested my game and I feel good about how I played," said Shepherd. "The Pfau course is a brand-new golf course that is one of the most challenging courses I've ever played. So, playing 54 holes there this weekend definitely made me a better player. It means a lot to win this tournament in my home state."
After moving into the lead after 36 holes, Shepherd carded a two-under-par, 69, in the final round Sunday on her way to finishing with a two-over-par, 215, to win by seven strokes over Ashley Kozlowski (222). Â
After parring the first seven holes Sunday, Shepherd missed the eighth green and would suffer her lone bogey of the day. She once again closed strong though as she drained a 25-foot birdie on the 357-yard, par four 11th to get back to even for the day. Shepherd then reached the green of the par five 13th in two and two-putted for birdie to get into red digits. She added one other birdie on No. 17 as she sank a 10-footer as she finished with a 69. Â
Shepherd hit 11 fairways, 11 greens and rolled 29 putts in the final round. In two Golfweek Collegiate Series events, Shepherd has finished third and first.
With rounds of 77, 74 and 74 over the last two days, fellow Duke sophomore
Megan Furtney carded a tied for fifth placement with a 12-over-par, 225. She notched 14 pars Sunday, while rolling in a birdie on the 363-yard, par four fourth hole. Furtney now owns a tied for seventh and tied for fifth finish in two Golfweek Collegiate Series tournaments. Â
The Duke duo will next compete in the Golfweek Purdue Amateur in West Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 10-11. The event will take place at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
