CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.— The fifth-ranked Duke women's soccer team hit the road for the first time since September 10 and came away golden Thursday evening as junior
Delaney Graham scored in the 96th minute to push the Blue Devils past Boston College, 1-0, in overtime at Newton Field in Newton, Mass.
With the victory, Duke improved to 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the ACC, including three straight wins. Boston College dropped to 0-4-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the league. The Blue Devils went into overtime for the 12th time over the last 24 matches, including the fourth time this season.
In the first half, both teams attempted four shots each, but none were extremely dangerous.
The Blue Devils had one of their best chances in the last minute of the half as junior
Mackenzie Pluck drove down the left side of the pitch and sent a cross through the box where senior
Tess Boade was. Boade tried to get the ball around the keeper, but a Boston College defender was able to clear the ball off the line.
Delaney Graham paced the Blue Devils with two shots in the first.
The Blue Devils came out on the attack in the second half with Pluck and senior
Karlie Paschall each attempting shots but went wide in the first five minutes.
Boade, who is from Highlands Ranch, Colo., received a corner kick from Pluck at the 55:56 mark and laced an attempt that just slid over the crossbar. Sophomore
Sophie Jones also sent a shot shortly after, but Eagle goalkeeper Allie Augur was able to save the ball over the crossbar.
Duke nearly grabbed the lead at the 70:13 mark as Boade found an open
Marykate McGuire in the box, who finished into the top right corner, but McGuire was called for offside.
The Blue Devils kept attacking the Eagle goal with shots by senior
Caitlin Cosme, who sent a header off a corner kick that was saved, and McGuire fired a shot that was blocked.
Duke featured another excellent scoring chance at the 80:27 mark as Boade drove into the box and blasted a shot at the keeper that was saved, while Pluck grabbed the rebound and sent another shot in that was saved.
The Blue Devil defense held Boston College without a shot in the second half as Duke outshot the Eagles, 12-0.
Finally, at the 95:13 mark, Duke was able to notch the golden goal. Freshman
Grace Watkins and Paschall were able to win the ball on the left side of the pitch, before Paschall sent a cross to McGuire at the six-yard mark. A native of Portsmouth, R.I., McGuire bodied an Eagle defender and found a wide-open
Delaney Graham, who finished her second goal of the season to give Duke the 1-0 victory.
Graham, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., scored for the second straight contest and the third time in her three-year career, after being moved up front four matches ago.
The Blue Devils outshot the Eagles, 14-0, in the second half and overtime, while finishing the contest with an 18-4 ledger. Nine different Duke student-athletes attempted at least one shot in the match.
Duke's
Ruthie Jones collected two saves and registered her fourth shutout over the last five matches in goal for the Blue Devils.
Duke will continue its road swing this weekend as the Blue Devils travel to Syracuse for an 11 a.m., contest against the Orange. It will be aired live on RSN-TV.
