DURHAM, N.C. – Following another successful season, head coach
Robbie Church and the Duke women's soccer program are excited to now welcome the 2020 recruiting class.
Katie Groff is a part of the talented group set to arrive in Durham next fall.
"Katie comes from a long line of a Duke family," said Church. "Katie joins us from NC Courage. Katie is a very intelligent player and she reads the game really well. She's a great distributor around the back, makes good decisions with the ball, knows when to go forward and she knows when to step on the ball. I think Katie is going to be a really, really big player over the next four years."
A local product, Groff comes to Durham as native of Raleigh, N.C. The future Blue Devil enjoyed a successful freshman campaign at Leesville Road High School before continuing to be heavily involved on the club and academy level. Groff competed for both the NC Courage Girls Development Academy and the CASL in the Elite Clubs National League.
Groff also brings National Team experience to Duke after participating in a number of camps and competing for the U16 National Women's Soccer Team. The Raleigh, N.C., native participated in international events, competing against Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia and Germany.
A well-rounded student-athlete, Groff is heavily involved at Leesville Road as a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and National Technology Honor Society. Following her junior year, she ranked in the top three percent of her class.
Groff is regarded as the No. 37 prospect in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer, while being listed as the sixth-ranked player in the South Atlantic region and the 10
th-best defender in the country.
Groff is part of Duke's six-member 2020 recruiting class, and marks the third Blue Devil recruit to be announced. GoDuke.com is set to release details on all six of the newest Blue Devils in the coming weeks.
