DURHAM, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team defeated Kansas State, 4-0, Saturday afternoon for the start of the 2020 ITA Kickoff Weekend in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Blue Devils remain undefeated (3-0) as the Wildcats suffer their first loss of the season (1-1).
"Kansas State is good … they're better than what they finished last year," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "They are the best team we've played this year by far. I think the speed of the ball was a little different than we've played in matches and I honestly think it knocked us back a bit. We've had a couple matches but nothing like this. It took us a little bit to find our feet and our way in the doubles and also in singles. There were some close sets and we competed well in the second sets. I thought once we got used to being pushed around a bit, we handled ourselves."
For the third time this season, the Blue Devils secured the doubles point heading into singles. Freshman
Chloe Beck and junior
Kelly Chen made quick work on court one over No. 54 Margot Decker/Anna Turco, capturing a 6-1 victory. K-State answered with a 6-2 win from Lilla Barzo/Maria Linares over rookie
Yasmine Mansouri and sophomore
Margaryta Bilokin.
After trailing 3-4, senior
Meible Chi and junior
Hannah Zhao fought back to claim a 7-6 (2) third court victory over Karine Marion Job/Ines Mesquita. The Blue Devil duo dominated in the tiebreak with a 7-2 takedown.
Rookie Beck, tabbed No. 25 by the ITA, wasted no time on Duke's fifth court as she took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ines Mesquita. With the victory, Beck is now 3-0 this season in singles and has only dropped four games throughout three matches.
"Hopefully Chloe can keep building on what she's doing," Ashworth said. "Today during her match, I told her to be herself and keep playing how she plays. She has so much variety to her game and it's hard for girls to play against the kind of style she plays with."
It was Chi who claimed Duke's third point of the match. The senior who is ranked No. 77 by the ITA downed Rosanna Maffei (6-2, 6-1) on court four. Chi is now 3-0 in the early season.
It was a battle between Bilokin and Chen for who would clinch the match and ultimately, Bilokin sealed the deal just seconds before Chen. Bilokin, ranked No. 67 by the ITA, defeated Decker (6-2, 6-4) on court three for her third victory this season.
Duke will close out the ITA Kickoff Weekend Sunday against Tulsa at 2 p.m., in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
