DURHAM, N.C. – In a tight battle all evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium, Wake Forest registered a late bucket to take down Duke women's basketball, 60-58, Thursday.
The Blue Devils fell to 7-6, 1-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons improved to 8-5, 1-1.
Graduate student Haley Gorecki led Duke with 17 points and five rebounds, while junior Jade Williams (11) and graduate Kyra Lambert (10) also scored double-digits.
In the first quarter, Duke built a 10-2 lead as five different Blue Devils scored, but Wake Forest battled back to even the score, 10-10. The Blue Devils added two late baskets to take a 14-10 lead into the first break.
At the 8:05 mark of the second quarter, redshirt sophomore Mikayla Boykin entered the contest for the first time in 2019-20, after returning from a torn ACL a year ago. She had missed 350 days since the Miami contest last January. Boykin, a Clinton, N.C., product, later added her first field goal as she scored on a layup as the shot clock expired.
The Blue Devils grabbed a 28-20 lead late in the second quarter, but the Demon Deacons scored the final four points as Duke held a 28-24 lead at the half. Duke forced 11 first half turnovers for Wake Forest and scored nine points off those turnovers. Gorecki and Williams paced the Blue Devils with seven points and four rebounds each.
Wake Forest opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run and led by as many as four, before sophomore Miela Goodchild drained her second three-pointer of the day to put Duke back ahead, 38-37. The Demon Deacons hit 47.1 percent from the field in the quarter and outscored the Blue Devils, 18-15. Duke took a 43-42 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
With back-to-back baskets midway through the fourth, Wake Forest took a 51-47 lead forcing Duke's Joanne P. McCallie to call at timeout with 6:36 remaining. Lambert connected on a turnaround jumper as the shot clock went down and the Blue Devils had chances to tie on the next three possessions but couldn't get a shot to fall. Wake Forest's Ivana Raca registered a layup to go back ahead by four, 53-49.
Gorecki scored two straight buckets for the Blue Devils and Lambert sank a jumper with 1:10 remaining and Duke trailed 57-55.
After a stop on defense, freshman Azana Baines hit one-of-two free throws to cut the Demon Deacon lead to 57-56 with 22.0 seconds left. Wake Forest's Christina Morra was then fouled and hit one free throw to put the Demon Deacons ahead, 58-56 with 21.4 seconds on the clock. Gorecki, who is from Palatine, Ill., scored quickly to even the score, 58-58, with 15.9 seconds left.
Wake Forest advanced the ball on a timeout and Gina Conti hit a jumper with 1.4 seconds on the clock to win the game for the Demon Deacons.
The Blue Devils were outrebounded, 41-33, and snapped a 23-game winning streak for Duke against Wake Forest in Durham, N.C.
Duke senior Leaonna Odom missed her second straight contest with a lower body injury. Boykin finished the contest with two points and two assists in nearly nine minutes.
Wake Forest was led by Raca with 15 points.
Duke will next travel to Louisville, Ky., to take on seventh-ranked Louisville Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m., live on the ACC Network.
