Match 2
Duke vs. UNCW – Jan. 18 at 12 p.m.
Match 3
Duke vs. North Carolina A&T – Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.
Â
DURHAM, N.C. – Following its first win of the season at Hawai'i, Duke men's tennis is set to open the 2020 season at home with a 12-match homestand, beginning with UNCW and North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Jan. 18 in the Sheffield Tennis Center.
Â
HISTORY WITH UNCW
Saturday's meeting marks the second-ever dual match between the two programs as the Blue Devils picked up a 4-0 win against the Seahawks on May 11, 2013 in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Duke first faced UNCW this fall while hosting the James Bonk Invitational as Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom topped
Sean Sculley and
Nick Stachowiak, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Black bracket. Facing the tandem again,
Andrew Zhang and
Michael Heller took down Groom and Caula in the quarterfinals at the Carolina ITA Regional (6-0, 6-2).
Â
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
With a strong 2018-19 season, the Seahawks earned the top seed in the CAA Tournament but fell to Elon, 4-3, in the Championship match to finish the season with a 12-11 record. UNCW has reached the CAA Championship final match the last three years and won two titles ('16-17, '17-18), earning two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Â
Caula returns for his sophomore campaign as the 2019 CAA Co-Rookie of the Year. Following strong victories in tournament play, Groom and Caula came in at No. 36 in the final fall ITA doubles rankings. Â
Â
HISTORY NORTH CAROLINA A&T
In similar fashion to UNCW, this will also be the second meeting between Duke and North Carolina A&T. The Aggies traveled to Durham on Feb. 20, 2016 where the Blue Devils cruised to a 7-0 victory.
Â
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
Following a 1-17 season and a last-place finish in the MEAC, the Aggies were predicted to finish fifth in the southern division while receiving two first-place votes in 2020. Returning for the Aggies is Vasil Ivanov who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year and a member of the All-MEAC First Team last season.
Â
HOME OPENER RECORD
Since Smith took over in 2008-09, the Blue Devils have gone 9-2 in their home-opening matches. Dukes' two losses came against Elon in '14 and No. 12 Illinois in '18.
LAST TIME OUT
Heavy rain brought many weather delays in Honolulu, resulting in Duke's original season opener to be cancelled on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Despite three delays the next day, the Blue Devils notched their first win of 2020 with a 4-1 win over Hawai'i. Due to weather, the match started with singles play where
Samuel Rubell,
Garrett Johns and
Edu Güell all defeated their opponents while No. 117 Zhang clinched the victory on court four with a comeback win in three sets.
DOUBLES SHOWING
Saturday will be the first showing of Duke's duos in the dual season as the team cut doubles play due to weather at Hawai'i. The final fall ITA doubles rankings slotted Sulley/Stachowiak at No. 11 after posting a 14-4 record in the fall, including a 5-2 record against ranked opponents. Heller/Zhang only competed in one tournament together – the ITA Carolina Regional – where they went 4-1 to earn themselves the No. 42 ranking.
