DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's golf program will be honored Saturday during the Duke football contest against N.C. A&T. Opening kickoff is slated for 6 p.m., at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils will be recognized as a team during a third quarter timeout for winning their seventh NCAA Championship last May in Fayetteville, Ark. After finishing third in stroke play and earning the No. 3 seed in match play, Duke went on to knock off Stanford, Arizona and Wake Forest to post its first NCAA title since the championship moved to match play in 2015.
Head coach Dan Brooks, who is entering his 36th season with the Blue Devils, now owns seven NCAA Championships, which is the most by any women's golf head coach. All seven members of the 2019-20 Duke women's golf team will be on the field for the recognition – senior Ana Belac, junior Hannah O'Sullivan, junior Miranda Wang, junior Jaravee Boonchant, sophomore Gina Kim, freshman Megan Furtney and freshman Erica Shepherd. Assistant coach Jon Whithaus will also be on the field along with Brooks to be honored.
In-between the first and second quarter, three Blue Devils will be recognized. The freshman tandem of Furtney and Shepherd will be honored for winning the United States Golf Association (USGA) U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship last April in Jacksonville, Fla. The Blue Devil duo tied for fourth place in stroke play qualifying to secure the No. 5 seed and then went on to win five match play contests to bring home the USGA title.
Kim, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., will also be honored for her outstanding play at the U.S. Women's Open over the summer. She turned in a first round score of six-under, 66, which tied for the lowest 18-hole score in U.S. Women's Open history by an amateur. She went on to place tied for 12th overall, which earned her low amateur honors for the championship. Kim's 72-hole ledger of 283 was tied for the second-lowest by an amateur in U.S. Women's Open history.
USGA's Director of Player Relations, Liz Fradkin, will be in attendance to present the trophy to Furtney/Shepherd along with the low amateur medal for Kim.
Duke will open the 2019-20 campaign Sept. 16-18 at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minn.
