CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite a number of chances for both squads, Sunday's top 10 showdown at Klöckner Stadium Field between the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils (6-1-3) and top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers (9-0-2) ended in a scoreless draw.
"What a great performance from our players and our coaches," said head coach
Robbie Church. "I think we need to give special props for to
Kieran Hall for a great gameplan that our kids learned quickly. They played so hard during the game. We didn't have a lot of shots, but we were organized. I thought we had the top three chances in the game, of course the one in overtime. I thought we carried our gameplan out to perfection. I'm just proud of our effort."
The two teams entered the halftime break scoreless after a clean first half of action that only featured four fouls from each side. Duke managed to keep Virginia off the scoreboard, despite the Cavaliers controlling the momentum throughout the first 45. Virginia held the advantage in shots, 11-0, in the first period, while corner kicks were even with four apiece.
The Cavaliers were aggressive out the gates, registering four shot attempts within the first 20 minutes of play, including one on target that was saved by redshirt junior
Brooke Heinsohn. Virginia continued to control the advantage for the remainder of the first period, but the Blue Devil defense held strong to keep the contest scoreless heading into the break.
Duke made adjustments in the second period, creating several scoring opportunities. The Blue Devils' first shot of the contest came from sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck in a favorable attempt in the 65
th minute. Junior
Tess Boade delivered a nice through ball to Pluck who broke away for a one-on-one opportunity with the UVA goalkeeper before firing off a shot that sailed wide right of the goal.
The Blue Devils created another chance in the 79
th minute, with this time being sophomore
Marykate McGuire. After winning possession in a battle with the Cavalier goalie near the top of the box, McGuire took several touches on the right side of the box before sending a shot towards the goal that carried wide left.
The two teams closed out regulation with Virginia holding the shot advantage, 14-3, with all of Duke's attempts coming in the second 45. The Cavaliers also held the edge in corner kicks following regulation, 6-4, as the top-10 matchup headed into overtime.
Duke created several opportunities in the overtime period, highlighted by a one-on-one opportunity from Boade with UVA keeper. Boade worked the final third of the field in the 97
th minute before firing off a shot that was saved by the goalie in an impressive effort.
The Blue Devils closed out overtime periods with three shot attempts, while holding the Cavaliers to only one attempt in the second overtime.
Heinsohn collected her third shutout of the season, including the team's sixth overall. The redshirt junior closed out the contest with five saves.
The Blue Devils will take the upcoming week off before returning to action next Sunday, Oct. 6, for the third and final matchup of their three-game road stretch. Duke travels to Blacksburg next weekend to take on No. 16 Virginia Tech. The matchup is set for a 2 p.m. start, with action airing live on ACC Network.
