Duke Starts Solid at Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Duke women's tennis team saw success Friday during the first day of the 33rd Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C.
Duke got off to a hot start by advancing all three doubles teams to the second round. No. 41 Kelly Chen/Margaryta Bilokin defeated No. 43 Anna Ross/Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt 8-7 (4) before taking down Megan Davies/Gabriela Martinez Asensi of South Carolina 8-7 (4). The duo will take on Georgia Tech's Jones/Flores Saturday at 9 a.m.
The rookie/senior tandem of Chloe Beck/Meible Chi saw success Friday as well and took down both opponents. Beck/Chi defeated Magda Adaloglou/Tamara Racine of Mississippi State (8-6) before an 8-6 win over Eliza Omnirou/MC Meredith of Wake Forest. The two will play Makenna Jones/Cameron Morra of North Carolina Saturday at 9 a.m., in a battle of the blues.
Ema Lazic/Summer Dvorak defeated Luna Dormet/Mary Beth Hurley of Ohio State (8-6) before falling to Nami Otsuka/Gia Cohen of Georgia Tech (8-5) in the second round. They will play Ryngler/Labrana of Texas Saturday at 9:45 a.m.
Duke carried its momentum into singles action with four moving on to Saturday's next round as Chen, Hannah Zhao, Lazic and Bilokin secured victories in their respective flights.
Chen, tabbed No. 5 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated No. 49 Mia Horvit of USC (6-1, 6-2) while Zhao took down Vanderbilt's Dasha Kourkina 6-1, 6-4. Lazic competed against Michigan State's Meredith Roberts and won 6-3, 6-2 before Bilokin upset No. 15 Christine Rosca 6-4, 7-5, marking her highest ranked win of her Duke career.
Action will resume tomorrow morning in Greenville.
