Blue Devils Open Strong at Duke Bonk Invitational

Duke Posts 12 Wins on Day One in Cary
CARY, N.C. – Fall action officially got underway for the Blue Devils Friday with the opening day of play at the Duke James Bonk Invitational. Members of the Duke squad combined for 12 victories – six in doubles and six in singles – to kick off the three-day tournament in strong fashion.
The Blue Devils began the day in doubles action, with the freshman tandem of Garrett Johns and Omni Kumar rolling into the finals of their draw with a 6-2 win over Elon's Dino Bonetta and Maxwell Zucker and a 6-4 defeat of NC State's Robin Catry and Tristan Smith. Also notching two doubles wins were junior Edu Güell and freshman Michael Heller, who won 7-6 (3) in both matches Friday morning.
Güell, Johns, Sculley and Stachowiak all cruised to straight sets victories in singles. Heller also advanced after topping Jorge Nunez of North Florida, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, as did fellow rookie Andrew Zhang after his opponent was forced to retire.
Play continues Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park, beginning with doubles at 9 a.m.
