GLENEAGLES, Scotland – In her first appearance in the Solheim Cup, Duke University alumna Celine Boutier shined as she registered an impressive 4-0 record over three days on her way to helping lead Europe to a 14.5 to 13.5 victory in Gleneagles, Scotland.
"It's pretty unbelievable," commented Boutier. "I'm so happy to be able to bring another point to the team and very excited about the round today. I feel like we both played pretty well and very steady. So it was definitely good."
With both teams knotted 8-8 heading into Sunday's single action, Europe needed a late charge to take back the cup for the first time since 2013. After USA's Marina Alex missed a 10-foot birdie that would have retained the Cup for the Americans, Suzann Pettersen sank a 7-foot birdie on the 18th hole to lift Europe to the victory.
"Yeah, it's very hard to describe," added Boutier. "I feel like I've never really experienced something like that. But it's something you have to really embrace and kind of I feel like once -- I guess it's different because the team -- the crowd and the team's all behind you. But when you play for something bigger than yourself, it's something very special and very hard to describe."
Boutier, a 2016 Duke graduate, continued her solid play in singles action Sunday as she went up against Annie Park of the United States. Park jumped out to a hot start winning the first two holes, but Boutier came back to win holes No. 5 and No. 7 to get the match back to all square. After a birdie on No. 10 by Park to take a 1-up lead, Boutier responded with a birdie of her own at No. 11. Boutier registered two more birdies on No. 13 and No. 17 to take a 2-up lead with two holes to play. Both golfers parred No. 17 and Boutier won 2-and-1.
"Yeah, it's unreal," said Boutier on her performance. "I mean I would have never expected to do so well, but I had a great partner in the doubles with Georgia. So we managed to have two points. And then today I just tried to focus on my game. And after that me and Annie both played very well and steady all day. We just have to make birdies to win holes. And that's the kind of golf we like to play, so it was a very good round, and kind of an incredible experience, four points for the European team."
The 14.5-13.5 victory is tied for the smallest winning margin in Solheim Cup history.
