DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke football program held its first fully-padded practice of the 2019 season Tuesday morning at the Brooks Practice Facility. This marked the fifth practice of the year for the Blue Devils.
After practice head coach David Cutcliffe addressed the media and praised the competition within each position on the field.
“It comes out here on this grass,” said Cutcliffe. “This is the only place the seeds of victory will grow. They don't grow on game fields. It becomes competitive. I want to know who will fight to win, I don't want lip service. In these reps, a freshman has a chance to show us that he is a better fighter to win the game. It has been our focus right now and it is a huge part of being a really good program.”
Senior defensive end Tre Hornbuckle discussed the mindset of the competition in Duke's defense during camp. Hornbuckle comes into the 2019 season with 17 career starts and 94 career tackles.
“You see how mentally tough you are,” Hornbuckle said. “It's a test of your character. It is hot and uncomfortable. It is a battle and you have to keep fighting day in and day out. You have to depend on your brother beside you to keep pushing you. We have to push each other. When we are tired we have to lean on each other. That is going to matter during game time.”
Duke continues preparation for the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game against Alabama on Saturday, August 31 in Atlanta. Tickets for the game, and every Duke football game, can be purchased here.
