ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Maria Mateas was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rookie of the Year as announced Sunday, marking the fifth time in program history a Blue Devil has garnered the accolade.
Mateas follows in the footsteps of Beatrice Capra (2012), Ansley Cargill (2001), Karin Miller (1997) and Vanessa Webb (1996).
Mateas held the top spot on Duke's lineup the entire season where she earned the highest ranking of eighth in the country.
A first team All-ACC selection, Mateas posted an 8-3 ledger in conference play, highlighted by upsetting NC State's then eighth-ranked Anna Rogers (6-1, 6-2) to help the Blue Devils defeat the ninth-ranked Wolfpack. In the fall, Mateas defeated then second-ranked Makenna Jones of North Carolina (6-1, 6-4) in the semifinals of the ITA All-American.
Mateas was solid on Duke's third court in doubles as she paired with fellow rookie Margaryta Bilokin to post a 14-5 overall ledger this spring.
Mateas will face No. 43 Asuka Kawai of Illinois Monday at 11:30 a.m., at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
