- Looking to even the season series, No. 1 Duke invades the Carrier Dome Saturday night for a date with Syracuse.
- The game is expected to draw an NCAA on-campus arena record crowd of nearly 36,000, surpassing a mark set in two previous Duke-Syracuse games at the Carrier Dome in 2014 and 2015 (35,446).
- In the nine matchups since 'Cuse joined the ACC (Duke leads 5-4), two have been decided in overtime and the average margin of victory has been just 4.7 points.
- The Blue Devils find themselves in a three-way tie atop the ACC standings at 11-2 with Virginia and North Carolina, while Syracuse and Florida State are each two games back.
- Freshman RJ Barrett, who has posted a triple-double and double-double in his last two games, continues to lead the ACC in scoring at 23.1 points. He is fifth on Duke's freshman scoring list -- 94 points shy of Duke's rookie scoring record.
- Barrett is 11th in the ACC in rebounding (7.6) and has led Duke on the boards in six of the last eight games. He is averaging 9.4 rebounds over the last 11 games.
- Freshman Zion Williamson, this week's ACC Player and Rookie of the Week, is second in the ACC in scoring (22.4) and leads the ACC in field goal percentage (.683) and steals (2.2).
- Williamson sustained a Grade 1 right knee sprain in the opening minute of the UNC game, and is listed as day-to-day.
- Freshman Cam Reddish has scored 19.8 points over the last five games, including a career high 27 against the Tar Heels.
Duke vs. Syracuse
Saturday's game is just the 14th all-time meeting between Duke and Syracuse, with the Blue Devils leading 7-6…The Blue Devils are looking to even the season series after falling to 'Cuse, 95-91, in overtime at Cameron Indoor on January 14 -- a game Duke played without Cam Reddish (illness) and lost Tre Jones (shoulder) four minutes in…Since Syracuse joined the ACC, Duke leads the series 5-4 -- in those nine games, two have been decided in overtime and the average margin of victory has been just 7.1 points…Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim served as an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski's Team USA staffs that won Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016…The two head coaches are first and second, respectively, in all-time Division-I victories -- Coach K with 1,123 and Boeheim with 944.
Attendance Record Could Fall
Saturday's game at the Carrier Dome should threaten an NCAA all-time attendance record in an on-campus venue -- a mark that Duke/Syracuse have set twice previously…On February 1, 2014 when Duke visited the Carrier Dome, the announced crowd of 35,446 set an NCAA record. That record was matched when Duke returned to Upstate New York on February 14, 2015…With additional seating being added before this season, SU is expecting the record to be surpassed for Saturday's game, which was announced as a sellout in January…In Duke's 26 games this season, 25 have come before sold-out crowds.
Duke: 6-0 in Road ACC Games
Duke has won its first six ACC road games this season, opening 6-0 away from home in ACC play for the first time since the 2011-12 season…That season, Duke went undefeated on the road in ACC play on its way to a 13-3 league record…It is just the fifth time in the Coach K era that Duke has started 6-0 on the road in ACC play…No. 1 Duke is the only undefeated road team remaining in the NCAA this season.
RJ, Zion Threaten ACC Records
With freshmen RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson continuing to set the scoring pace in the ACC, the duo should threaten the team's one-year-old freshman scoring record…Last season, Marvin Bagley III's 694 points were the most scored by a Duke freshman. Barrett is 94 points shy, while Williamson is 133 away…Barrett and Williamson are aiming to become the first freshman teammates in NCAA history to each average 20.0+ points in a season.
Defensive POY Semifinalists
Duke has two of the 10 national semifinalists for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year in freshmen Tre Jones and Zion Williamson…Jones, regarded by some as the best defensive player in the nation, has helped Duke lead the nation in steal rate, while Williamson is on pace to be just the third Blue Devil in history with 50+ steals and 50+ blocks in a season…Jones, Williamson and Kentucky's Ashton Hagans are the lone freshmen on the list…The winner of the award will come from the 10 semifinalists, which also includes Barry Brown Jr. (Kansas State), Brandon Clarke (Gonzaga), Hagans, De'Andre Hunter (Virginia), Tariq Owens (Texas Tech), Zavier Simpson (Michigan), Matisse Thybulle (Washington) and Grant Williams (Tennessee).
White Named Academic All-District
Junior Jack White earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District mention this week. He owns a 3.38 GPA in sociology…White advances to the ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Duke has 20 previous Academic All-Americans.
