DURHAM, N.C. – As the new year approaches, we want to take time to reflect some on the success and memories 2019 brought the Duke women's tennis team.
ASHWORTH NETS 500TH CAREER VICTORY
Head coach
Jamie Ashworth collected his 500th-career victory February 3, 2019 as the fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team defeated Illinois, 7-0, in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Ashworth then owned a 500-125 record at Duke in his 22 years as the Blue Devils were 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Durham with the victory over Illinois.
"Five hundred wins means we have had a ton of great players in my time here," Ashworth said. "They are the ones that go out and compete. They do a majority of the recruiting. They've done a great job of selling our program. It's great for me but it's great for our program. It means we've had a lot of success in my time here. So many people should take credit for it … not just me. Our players, coaches, athletic trainers … everyone that surrounds our program … it's for them as well."
CHEN, MATEAS EARN ITA ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
Kelly Chen and
Maria Mateas earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I All-American honors.
The criteria for ITA All-America honors include earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the final Oracle/ITA Singles Rankings.
Chen garners the accolade for the second straight year as she finished the year ranked No. 8 in the country while Mateas finished No. 18.
McCARTHY NETS 100TH CAREER WIN OVER SYRACUSE
Kaitlyn McCarthy became the 25th player in Duke women's tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau on April 12, 2019 as the fourth-ranked Blue Devils defeated Syracuse, 6-1, in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
"This is a great accomplishment for Kaitlyn," head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "You have to be consistent and she's won a lot of matches for us … a lot of big matches. She's been as solid as I've had in my time here. This says a lot about the person and player she is."
MATEAS NAMED ITA NATIONAL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Freshman
Maria Mateas was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rookie of the Year as announced Sunday, marking the fifth time in program history a Blue Devil has garnered the accolade.
Mateas held the top spot on Duke's lineup the entire season where she earned the highest ranking of eighth in the country.
A first team All-ACC selection, Mateas posted an 8-3 ledger in conference play, highlighted by upsetting NC State's then eighth-ranked Anna Rogers (6-1, 6-2) to help the Blue Devils defeat the ninth-ranked Wolfpack. In the fall, Mateas defeated then second-ranked Makenna Jones of North Carolina (6-1, 6-4) in the semifinals of the ITA All-American.
Mateas was solid on Duke's third court in doubles as she paired with fellow rookie
Margaryta Bilokin to post a 14-5 overall ledger this spring.
CHI CAPTURES 100TH CAREER SINGLES WIN
Senior
Meible Chi collected her 100th career singles victory November 2, 2019 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Chi, who is tabbed No. 18 by the ITA, outlasted NC State's Lana Mavor 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to become the 26th player in Duke women's tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau.
BILOKIN SENDS DUKE TO THE FINAL FOUR
Rookie
Margaryta Bilokin was clutch as she clinched the match for the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team as they defeated fourth-ranked South Carolina, 4-1, May 18, 2019 in quarterfinal action of the NCAA Team Championships. The late start and long night proved no match for the Blue Devils at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The victory sent Duke to the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
"You never know what's going to happen," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "She [Margaret] closed it out in the middle of the second set and did a great job in the third set. She's a freshman out there in her first experience like this."
BECK ITA ALL-AMERICAN RUN
Rookie
Chloe Beck's run at the 2019 ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) All-American Championships came to an end in the semifinals of the main draw.
Beck fell to No. 14 Ashley Lahey of Pepperdine (6-3, 6-3) to end her impressive run as a freshman.
Beck was originally placed in the qualifying singles draw and worked her way into the main draw by defeating six ranked opponents.
DWT HOSTS THREE ROUNDS OF NCAA TOURNAMENT ACTION
The Duke women's tennis team earned its 30th-consecutive bid to the NCAA Team Championships and enter the event for the 31st time in program history. The Blue Devils were tabbed as a regional host site and played the first and second rounds in Durham, before advancing to hosting the Sweet 16.
CHEN'S MEMORABLE NCAA TOURNAMENT RUN
Sophomore
Kelly Chen's incredible run at the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship came to an end May 24, 2019 at the USTA National Campus as she fell to second-ranked Katarina Jokic in the semifinals in Orlando, Fla.
Throughout both the team and individual tournament, Chen battled adversity that included spending time in the hospital after the team's South Carolina victory. Despite multiple IV drips the past few days, Chen always rose to the occasion and left it all on the court like the fighter she is.
Chen had a memorable second season in a Duke uniform, compiling a 26-5 overall ledger this spring. She defeated 18 ranked opponents including three higher ranked foes this week during the individual championship.
Chen won 12 consecutive matches, dating back to April 10th and was a solid player in the Duke lineup at No. 2 and No. 3.
Chen was a vital part in Duke's success as a team as they made back-to-back appearances at the finals of the ACC Championship and semifinals of the NCAA Team Championship.
DWT HEADS TO ACC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
It was senior
Ellyse Hamlin who pulled out the victory to send the third-ranked Duke women's tennis team to the finals of the ACC Championships, defeating 11th-ranked Florida State, 4-3, April 20, 2019 at Cary Tennis Center.
"Ellyse has been in a lot of big matches," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "I felt it was a really good matchup for Ellyse, even before the match started. I thought that she handled it well when there was pressure on her in the end. She made some really good shots. You have a senior on the court who has been in a lot of big matches, maybe not in that situation that often but she's been in a lot of big matches. Throughout her four years, she knows how to play big points and she did a good job."
