COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Duke women's basketball team traveled to fifth-ranked South Carolina Thursday and dropped an 89-46 decision at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.
Duke (7-4) was paced by sophomore Miela Goodchild with 11 points, while graduate Kyra Lambert added eight points and six rebounds.
The Blue Devils got off to an early start hitting three out of their first four shots and led by as many as four after Lambert drained a three-pointer. Neither team would lead by more than four in the first quarter, while Duke trailed, 16-14, after 10 minutes. Lambert had a season high two three-pointers made in the first and paced the Blue Devils with six points.
South Carolina went on an 11-4 run in the second quarter and led 29-18 at the second media timeout of the contest. Duke featured 15 first half turnovers, while South Carolina hit 8-of-13 field goals in the second period on its way to outscoring the Blue Devils, 21-5.
The Gamecock defense limited the Blue Devils to only 1-of-8 field goals in the second quarter and extended their lead to 37-19 at the half. The Blue Devils also got into foul trouble in the first half with senior Leaonna Odom and junior Jade Williams each having three, while Duke was called for 14 fouls to only five for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina kept making it tough for the Blue Devils as the Gamecocks outscored Duke, 26-11, in the third period. Goodchild led the Blue Devils with four points in the quarter. Duke finished with 16 points in the fourth and hit 6-of-18 field goals in the fourth quarter.
Duke committed a season-high 30 turnovers and the Gamecocks scored 41 points off those turnovers. The 89 points allowed were a season high.
South Carolina (11-1) featured six players in double-digit scoring led by Zia Cooke and Lele Grissett with 12 each.
Duke will be off for the Christmas holiday, before returning to action at Florida Gulf Coast University Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m., in Fort Myers, Fla. The game will be aired live on ESPN+.
