BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke men's cross country team took first place at the 6k Hokie Open on the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course Friday afternoon.
Duke, which ran the Buford Meredith Course just a week ago in the ACC Championships, totaled 15 points in the head to head competition against Virginia Tech. The first-place showing was the fifth of the season for the Blue Devils, adding on to their previous wins at the Elon Opener, Roy Griak Invite, Great American XC Festival and Pirate Invite.
Junior Michael Ungvarsky led the way for Duke, clocking a first-place time of 18:37.5. Four Blue Devils finished one after the other for places five through eight, as freshman Rory Cavan placed fifth (18:53.3), sophomore Matt Politis sixth (19:06.7), senior Ethan Ready seventh (19:09.7) and freshman Ryan Thompson eighth (19:12.3).
"Our guys ran tough," said head coach Norm Ogilvie. "Virginia Tech took the early lead, but our guys came on really, really well toward the end. The course had a lot of mud on it from ACC's last week, but everyone is happy after this performance."
Rounding out the top-seven runners were freshman Connor Wells (19:38.1) and sophomore Joe Cullen (19:47.8), who finished 15th and 16th, respectively.
The Blue Devils improved their overall record to 66-30 and 13-10 in ACC action.
Duke is back in action Friday, November 15 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet in Charlottesville, Va. Start time is set for 10:30 a.m.
