CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to top-ranked Virginia (14-4, 8-2 ACC) on the road at Kl?ckner Stadium Sunday evening in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal matchup. With the loss, the Blue Devils fall to 8-3-7 on the season, while the Cavaliers advance to next weekend's semifinals.
One goal proved to be the difference in the tightly played contest between the two top 10 foes, marking Duke's second consecutive top 10 matchup. After a scoreless 54 minutes of play, the Cavaliers broke through for the lone goal of the contest at the 54:47 mark, which decided the game.
The two teams entered the halftime break scoreless after a close first half of action. Duke held a narrow advantage in shots, 5-3, while Virginia carried the advantage in corner kicks, 2-1, after the first 45.
The Blue Devils registered several scoring opportunities, including shots on goal from freshman
Emmy Duerr and senior
Ella Stevens. The Duke defense held Virginia in check for the majority of the first half, as the Cavaliers only recorded one shot on goal, keeping the game scoreless headed into the break.
Virginia broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 55
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers worked the ball inside the box before senior Meghan McCool sent a shot into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
The Blue Devils created several chances across the second half, but were unable to break through with the equalizer.
Duke limited Virginia to a season-low in shots across ACC play as the Blue Devils closed out the contest with an 11-10 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even across both teams with four apiece.
Duke now shifts its focus to the NCAA Tournament, as the team awaits next week's selection show to find out opening round pairings.
