PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Duke volleyball team fell to No. 2 Pitt 3-0 (18-25, 29-31, 10-25) Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pa.
With the setback, Duke falls to 11-14 overall and 4-8 in the ACC while Pitt remains undefeated in the conference (12-0) and is 23-1 overall.
Duke registered 25 total blocks this afternoon to Pitt's 11 and were led by freshman
Lizzie Fleming with eight and sophomore
Lily Cooper with five. Offensively, Duke hit .158 percent as sophomore
Ade Owokoniran led the squad with nine kills while Fleming hit .375 with zero errors. Libero
Mackenzie Cole added 13 digs off a Pitt team that hit .337 percent overall for the match.
Pitt was led by three players in double-digit kills: Layne Van Buskirk (13), Chinaza Ndee (10) and Stephanie Williams (10). Setter Lexis Akeo dished 38 assists for the Panthers.
The Panthers got off to a strong start in the first set by hitting .500 with 22 kills and only three errors. Duke was able to hit .324 with 13 kills and two errors as Owokoniran put down three while
Gracie Johnson had four.
Duke trailed 22-13 in the second set before a huge eight-point run to cut Pitt's lead to one. Cooper registered back-to-back kills out of a Duke timeout to tie it up at 24 before Duke took the lead from an Owokoniran and Cooper block at the net. The score would go on to be tied five more times in the second before Pitt scored three unanswered points to take the second set by a narrow margin (31-29).
The Blue Devils were unable to find their rhythm offensively in the third set with just six kills and nine errors as the Panthers hit .476 percent to remain undefeated in conference play.
Duke will be back in action Thursday, Nov. 8 by welcoming Tobacco Road rival North Carolina to Cameron Indoor Stadium.
