DURHAM, N.C. – Spearheaded by a great defensive effort in the first half Thursday and a career-high 30 points by graduate
Haley Gorecki, the Duke women's basketball team downed Idaho State, 85-66, in non-conference action played in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to 3-2 on the season, while Idaho State fell to 2-2.
Gorecki featured a solid all-around game collecting a career-high 30 points, while adding four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one blocked shot. It marked her 16
th career contest with scoring 20 or more points, including the first time this year.
The Blue Devils used excellent defensive pressure to force five early turnovers and Duke led by as many as 15 points, 20-5, in the first quarter. Six different Duke players scored in the first, led by six points from
Onome Akinbode-James, who came off the bench for the first time this season. The Blue Devils would lead, 22-10, at the half, after hitting 60.0 percent of their field goals and holding the Bengals to 28.6 percent shooting.
Duke cooled off in the second quarter hitting only 26.7 percent from the field and went to the lockerroom at the half leading, 35-23. Gorecki, who hails from Palatine, Ill., paced the Blue Devils with 10 points marking the ninth straight game she has scored in double figures.
Both teams came out of the break and combined to score 45 points in the third quarter hitting 15-of-31 attempts. The Blue Devils got the best of the Bengals outscoring Idaho State, 25-20, and led 60-43 with 10 minutes remaining. Gorecki scored nine third quarter points on her way to entering the fourth with a season-high 19 points.
The 25 third quarter points was the second-most by Duke this season and tied for 10
th most in Blue Devil history.
Gorecki scored 20 second half points and finished the contest hitting a career-high 13 free throws on 15 attempts. Senior
Leaonna Odom added 17 points, while Akinbode-James chipped in 10 points for the Blue Devils.
As a team, Duke scored 50 second half points and scored 22 points off 19 Idaho State turnovers. Five different Blue Devils blocked a shot led by sophomore
Uchenna Nwoke with a career-high two.
Estefania Ors led Idaho State with 17 points, while four different Bengals reached double-digit scoring.
Duke will remain at home Sunday, Nov. 24 as the Blue Devils host Troy in Cameron at 2 p.m. The game will air live on ACC Network Extra.
