DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University women's golf head coach
Dan Brooks has announced the signing of two standout golfers in the early signing period as Wilmington, Del., product Phoebe Brinker and Sugar Land, Texas, native Anne Chen will join the Blue Devils for the 2020-21 campaign.
"I couldn't be more excited about our 2020 incoming class," added Brooks. "Both Anne and Phoebe are all about team, even though they play an individual sport. Their team spirit will fit well with the culture we've been able to build over the years. Both are great fun to be around, with easy smiles and senses of humor."
The duo combined to win four American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) titles, while notching 26 top 10 and 41 top 20 finishes on the AJGA over their career.
Brinker is a 2019 AJGA First Team Rolex Junior All-America, while currently being ranked No. 7 in the AJGA overall and No. 4 in the class of 2020. She was a member of the 2019 Junior Solheim Cup United States team that won, 13-11, and helped lead the East squad to a 27.5-22.5 victory at the 2019 Wyndham Cup.
"Phoebe projects a naturally positive attitude, combined with great athleticism and a tremendous, powerful golf swing," said Brooks. "There are no limits to what she can accomplish in golf. I've watched her develop over the last couple years, from having great potential to being a truly skilled player. She brings the type of energy and skill that will excel at Duke, on the golf course and on campus."
Over the last five years, Brinker totaled 12 top five, 16 top 10 and 21 top 20 placements. She won the 2018 Colonial Junior, while winning the 2016 and 2017 Windham Mountain Resort Junior All-Star on the AJGA. Brinker advanced to match play at the 2018 and 2019 USGA U.S. Girls' Junior Championships. She is a four-time All-Conference selection starting in eighth grade and three-time Delaware State Golfer of the Year.
A 2018 AJGA Rolex Junior First Team All-America, Chen has been ranked as high as No. 10 in the AJGA over her career and is currently listed No. 10 by Golfweek. She registered three top 10 finishes on the AJGA in 2019 and has collected 20 top 20 placements over her career. Chen registered her first AJGA title in 2018 at the Hunter Mahan Junior Championship with rounds of 69 and 70.
"The first time I saw Anne play golf I was sold," commented Brooks. "Her golf swing and her demeanor already had the look of a professional, as a young junior golfer. I expect Anne will bring a seasoned approach to practice and training which will benefit our team. Anne has a very positive outlook – essential to fully excelling in the challenging world of college golf and academics."
Chen competed on the victorious West squad at the 2018 Wyndham Cup and reached the round of 16 at the 2019 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. She also qualified for the 2017 U.S. Women's Open and the 2017 LPGA Volunteers of America Texas Shootout. Chen competed in the USGA U.S. Women's Amateur on three occasions and was the youngest golfer in the field in 2015. She was a two-time First Team All-District and Player of the Year at William P. Clements H.S.
