Wake Forest Invitational Oracle Fall Nationals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Duke freshman Andrew Zhang advanced to the A1 draw final of the Wake Forest Invitational after topping No. 66 Oliver Stuart (Mercer), 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Zhang notched his second win over a ranked opponent during the fall season with his three-set victory over Stuart. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native bounced back strong after dropping the first set by two points in the tiebreak to win the next two.

Sunday will feature Zhang in the A1 singles draw final against Siddhant Banthia of Wake Forest.

Also competing at the Wake Forest Invitational, freshman Omni Kumar and senior Spencer Furman sported wins on Saturday. Kumar advanced to the A2 West semifinals by the way of a walk over in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he defeated Matthew Thomson (Wake Forest) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the A2 West finals where he faces Eduardo Nava of Wake Forest.

Furman topped Bastien Huon of Campbell in the A2 West quarterfinals 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Nava in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2. He continues his time in Winston-Salem tomorrow against Matthew Thomson in the A2 Southwest match.

Zhang and Furman took the court together to top Carver Arant and Lucas Gueymard (Mercer) 7-5 in the A3 West semifinals to advance to the final. In the final, the tandem will take on Mikhail Sokolovskiy and Manoel Alencar of Central Florida.

At the Oracle ITA National Fall championships in Newport Beach, Calif., Sean Sculley and Nick Stachowiak saw their time come to an end in the consolation semifinals. The Duke duo fell to No. 56 Will Davies and Oliver Okonkwo of Iowa in a decisive third set. Duke bounced back to win the second set 6-2 after dropping the first set 4-6 and forced the tiebreak but came us just short for a final line of 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (8).
