Women’s Basketball Hosts Blue/White Scrimmage

DURHAM, N.C. – The 2019-20 Duke women's basketball team took the court Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium for its annual Blue/White Scrimmage.
In the first half, the White Team downed the Blue squad, 44-29, behind 12 points each from graduate Haley Gorecki and junior Jade Williams. The White Team jumped out to a 23-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, before outscoring the Blue Team, 21-14, in the second. Onome Akinbode-James (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Miela Goodchild (7 points, 4 rebounds) were also key in the first half for white.
For the second half, the Blue Devils went up against the practice players for an exciting 20 minutes. The practice players jumped out to an early, 22-15, lead in the first quarter, but Duke shot 64.7 percent in the fourth quarter on its way to outscoring the guys, 30-20, in the final frame to win, 45-42. Senior Leaonna Odom totaled 10 points on 4-of-4 field goals in the half. Gorecki, Williams and freshman Azana Baines chipped in seven points each.
The practice players were led by Sarab Bhasin with 11 points.
For all 40 minutes, Gorecki and Williams finished with 19 points each, while Odom (15), Goodchild (13), Baines (12) and Akinbode-James (10) totaled double-digit scoring. Williams, who hails from The Colony, Texas, was close to a double-double with 18 points and eight boards.
Freshman Jaida Patrick pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while adding five points and a game-high four blocked shots. Goodchild drained 3-of-5 from downtown as well.
Gorecki, an All-America candidate, continued to showcase her all-around game a she finished with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and one blocked shot.
Duke will close exhibition action versus Alaska Anchorage Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m., at home. Admission will be free. The season opener for Duke will take place Tuesday, Nov. 5 as the Blue Devils host High Point at 7 p.m., live on the ACC Network Extra.
