CARY, N.C.—Five Blue Devils continued their runs through the main singles draw, advancing to the round of 16 at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Region Championships held at Cary Tennis Park. A pair of Duke doubles teams also remain alive after winning two matches apiece today.
Among the five remaining in the main draw are the trio of freshmen
Michael Heller,
Garrett Johns, and
Andrew Zhang. Joining them are senior
Nick Stachowiak and junior
Edu Güell. In doubles action, the tandems of Zhang and Heller and Stachowiak and junior
Sean Sculley head into the round of eight Sunday.
After dropping just eight games in his two matches Friday, Stachowiak easily dispatched ACC foe Robin Catry 6-1, 6-3 in his lone singles match. The fifth-seeded veteran will take on No. 10 seed Connor Thompson of South Carolina at 9 a.m., for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
Zhang, the tournament's No. 13 seed, also carried his stellar first day into a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Wolfpack's Robert Turzak. He will face his toughest test in top-seeded and 15th-ranked Bar Botzer of Wake Forest.
Seeded seventh Güell eased into the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over UNC Wilmington's Leo Sprovieri, while Heller needed three sets to beat Bastien Huon from Campbell 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Güell will take on Seahawk Bruno Caula and Heller faces No. 9 seed Tadas Babelis of NC State.
Johns rounded out the rookie trio by outlasting Agustin Tamagnone from ECU 6-3, 7-5. He will play No. 12 seed Rrezart Cungu of Wake Forest tomorrow morning.
After a bye in the first round, the second-seeded pair of Stachowiak and Sculley cruised past Gardner-Webb's Connor Enslin and Seb Harris 8-1 to set up a showdown against Ben Wayand and Henry Lieberman from Charlotte.
Zhang and Heller won their opening match 8-2 and then took down the Wolfpack tandem of Turzak and Catry 8-4. They will face the top-seeded duo of Raphael Lambling and Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina.
Singles action gets underway at 9 a.m., Sunday morning. The championship quarterfinals are slated to begin at 1 p.m., while the consolation singles matches start at 10:30 a.m. Consolation quarterfinals are set to commence at 2 p.m.
